A Growing Problem in North America
It is estimated that 70% of adults in the United States will experience one or more traumatic events in their life and 20% or more will go on to develop PTSD - according to author, psychologist, researcher Dr. Fred Gallo, 2007.
Other statistics point out that 3.5% of Americans 18 or older- meaning more than 7.7 million people, suffer from PTSD at any given time (Kessler et al, 2005)
Canadian and American soldiers returning from war in Afghanistan are often victims to PTSD.
According to ceasefire.ca - What has killed the most U.S. military personnel during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars? Surprisingly, the answer is suicide.
The prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in returning veterans is quite high. Many veterans need years of intensive support to overcome the effects of PTSD and the increased possibility of suicide accompanying it. The amount of psychiatric drugs and their side effects has only led to more misery.

Senator Lt. General Romeo Dallaire, (now retired from the Canadian government) suffering from PTSD after his stint as commander of the UN mission in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, stated that the departments of National Defence and Veterans Affairs “don’t even want to count” the number of Canadian soldiers who have committed suicide since the war in Afghanistan began in 2002. - See more at: http://www.ceasefire.ca/?p=3782#sthash.cRnFRFaS.dpuf
According to a Department of Veterans Affairs report published in Feb 2013, almost once an hour a USA military veteran commits suicide. It's estimated that close to 23 soldiers and veterans on average are committing suicide every day, according to a report by ceasefire.ca. From 2009 to 2012 alone, more U.S. soldiers died by suicide than from traffic accidents, heart disease, cancer and homicide. There are more suicides among active duty soldiers than there are combat deaths. It works out that for every veteran killed by enemy combatants, at least 25 veterans kill themselves.
Now how horrendous is that?
Sixty nine percent (69%) of the suicides recorded were by veterans age 50 and older, so 31 percent (31%) of these suicides were by veterans 49 and younger, in the prime of their lives.
Who else suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Studies have shown that about 30% of veterans, 45% of battered women, 50% of sexually abused children, and 35% of adult rape victims are likely to suffer from PTSD at some point in their lifetime.
